Life as a grad student.

The world of a graduate student is different from the life of any regular student. Its like being a full time student and full time worker. It might sound weird to many but this is how it really works. You take classes like a full time student and you work whatever remaining time  you have in the office for your graduate advisor doing “research”. Even though, the professor pays you to work for only 10hrs a week, he expects you to work 24/7 in the office producing noteworthy results. Anything less is frowned up on, sadly.

My advisor is out for a conference for a week and since I have been slogging like a madman for the past couple of weeks, I decided that I would take a couple of days break. I still have a couple of days to finish the work assigned to me. In these two days, I have had time to finish a book, play a game and generally laze around. Grad student never get any sort of holidays. I have worked during the Christmas break, spring break and even during the weekends. So its only fair I take some time off now :) . So when I saw my colleague working in the office yesterday, I asked her why she was working when the advisor is away. She replied saying it was Monday and a working day. I told her that its only a “working day” when the advisor is in town and in his office.
